This picture was taken in Cogswell’s grant, a beautiful piece of conservation land that stretches down to the Essex River. My parents live in a house about a quarter mile away that was built in 1724 when Cogswell decided to sell off a small portion of his 300 acre holding.

I don't live in Essex anymore, but the town holds a special spot in my memory.  The Essex River was the perfect place to grow up.  I am lucky enough to have often traveled down river as a teenager, and run free for days at a time on Conomo Point in the summer.

This story is about the Essex River and how it has shaped the people who live along its shores. I am one of those people and this is a story I’ve yearned to tell, through radio, for years.

Special thanks to Kurt Wilhelm, Peter Phippen, Tim Purinton, Fred Fawcett, Stephan Gersh and Ed Becker.

Thanks for listening.
